True Capitalists Are Pro-Market, Not Pro-Business June 8, 2012

Could not have been stated batter. A great article from Stephen Carter @ Yale Law on a new book by Chigago Professor Luigi Zingales, read the whole thing. Here is a nice excerpt:

“The real trouble, he (Zingales) contends, is the death of the Horatio Alger myth. People no longer believe that hard work and following the rules will get you ahead. The game, they believe, is fixed. Zingales thinks they’re right. Special interests — particularly big business and big labor — hold too much influence over the divvying up of resources that has become among the most important functions of government. His solution, however, is less regulation, not more. He prefers fewer and simpler rules, and a government that encourages entrepreneurship without trying to become an entrepreneur.”

A very interesting article from Bloomberg, with a lot to say about the U.S. academia and health care and its economic functioning. Have a look as it applies to us as well, where higher education and a large part of health care are fully dependent on the state for their funding.

Obama Versus Romney Offers a Clash of Capitalisms – Good article for role of R&D May 11, 2012

I found this article very interesting, have a look at it. It offers a nice comparison of the core of the growth policies of the two contenders for the US presidency. The discussion about R&D spending is very good and here are two paragraphs from it (my emphasis in the next paragraph):

“Who can argue with R&D spending, the main engine of innovation? Both Obama and Romney are for making the R&D tax credit permanent. But Congress, after letting the R&D tax credit expire at the end of 2011, has yet to renew it. In 1992, the credit was the world’s most generous; by 2008, it was only the 24th most generous, and the rate of growth in business R&D spending has lagged that of many national competitors.

U.S. companies have been the major drivers in R&D spending (the government’s share of total R&D, which was 26 percent in 2008, peaked in 1964 at 67 percent), but business R&D spending as a proportion of gross domestic product has stayed relatively flat in the U.S. over the last decade. Moreover, just as with capital investment, U.S. companies are spending more of their R&D money overseas: From 1998 to 2008, U.S. corporate R&D overseas expanded at more than 2 1/2 times the rate at home.”

I think this is news worthwhile reading, as it relates to our department and to business initiatives. A former undergraduate student at our department, Fotis Papailias, who is currently finishing his Ph.D. @ Queen Mary University of London, has started an e-business named e-couriers.gr which offers very competitive pricing for courier services both at home and abroad. I think this is an effort worth supporting and I invite anyone reading this blog that has similar news about our current and former students to share it with us so we can support them as much as we can!
